Nick Saban is a fan of bringing in familiar faces and that’s no different with George Helow.
Helow is a former Michigan assistant who’s been hired by Alabama. Helow started his coaching career at Alabama as a defensive intern in 2012. He was the linebackers coach at Michigan from 2021-2022.
The move had to do with having someone familiar with the program who can be trusted to relay information to Saban following recruiting trips. Saban on Monday emphasized the importance of having someone like that on staff.
“George has been here before, so he was with us for a long time, knows our system. I think every year we’ve been in the playoffs, we’ve tried to bring somebody in. Primarily, because we spend 2 weeks on the road recruiting. So, somebody to do a little extra work that has good experience,” said Saban. “When we get off the road and being able to give us a good scouting report of what we need to know. That’s the purpose, to just add a special assistant to me to when I come off the road to get me up to speed. That’s the reason we’ve always done that.”
Helow was Michigan’s linebackers coach as the Wolverines embarked on their first of 3 straight trips to the Playoff. The assistant left Ann Arbor after the 2022 season. In 2022, Helow served under current UM defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and will have extensive knowledge of the system of the Wolverines.
The Crimson Tide and Wolverines meet in Pasadena on Jan. 1.
