The college football world was rocked once again this past week when reports emerged that the power brokers at the top of the sport had all agreed to expand the College Football Playoff once again to a 24-team format.
The writing had been on the wall for quite some time regarding further expansion, but the fact that the decision was made so quickly following the last round of expansion was a shocker to many.
Many prominent figures around the sport have also raised some serious concerns about how this new format will affect the sport, and that includes former Alabama head coach and current College GameDay host Nick Saban. Here’s what he had to say:
“There’s not 24 teams in the country that deserve to be in the playoffs,” Saban said on College GameDay. “… I don’t think there’s 24 teams in the country that can win the championship.”
Saban is not alone when it comes to this critique of the expanded College Football Playoff field, as many fans and analysts share similar concerns regarding the current 12-team format.
Only time will tell whether or not the 24-team CFP will be a net positive or negative for the sport of college football, but anytime a figure like Saban expresses these types of concerns, it warrants some serious attention.
