Nick Saban names ‘easiest place’ to recruit during his career

When Nick Saban worked as an assistant for the Cleveland Browns in the early 1990s, he was asked by head coach Bill Belichick to figure out which state produced the most NFL talent per capita.
After a bit of research, the answer wasn’t one he expected.
“It was Louisiana,” Saban said Friday on the Pat McAfee Show. “That’s the reason I took the job and I’mma tell you what… he was right. 15-18 really, really good football players that you could get out of Louisiana every year, and you’ve got a good enough national reputation to recruit some really good players from other places.”
The Tigers posted the No. 2, 3 and 4 recruiting classes from 2001-2004, respectively. Saban later said that LSU beats out Alabama, Michigan State and several other college programs he coached at as the “easiest place that I ever had to recruit to.”

The Tigers are currently a mainstay in the top 10 of 247Sports’ team recruiting rankings year-after-year. The last time LSU ranked outside the top 10 to finish a season was 2018, when the Tigers signed future NFL star Ja’Marr Chase.
