Nick Saban on if he expects Jalen Hurts to be on opening day roster

Wednesday meant that it was Alabama day at SEC Media Days.
In Hoover, fans would pack the lobby. In Atlanta, well, things weren’t much different. Alabama fans lined the blue carpet in hopes of catching a glimpse at Nick Saban or Alabama’s trio of players. One even trolled Georgia with a clever jersey.
But leading into SEC Media Days, the biggest storyline revolved around Alabama’s QB battle beween Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa. Of course, Saban kept most of it to himself, but he did have a couple things to say about the position.
On the QB competition during his intro, which he blamed on the media and said is yet to be determined:
“I guess you’ll ask about the quarterback controversy,” Saban said. “The controversy you (media) created.”
On if Jalen Hurts would be on the opening day roster:
“I have no idea,” Saban said. “I expect him to be there. I think it’s our job to give both players a very fair opportunity to win the job at their position. Both are capable. We’ll create a role for one or both.”
While answering the question on Hurts, Saban said that Hurts is set to graduate in December and wants him to stay and accomplish that. Along those same lines (Saban didn’t specifically address this), it would make more sense for Hurts to leave as a graduate transfer following the 2018 season as opposed to transferring now.
Interestingly, Tim Tebow recently explained why Saban should play both Hurts and Tagovailoa this season.
