North Carolina falls to UConn in final game before start of Bill Belichick era
North Carolina fell to UConn 27-14 in the Fenway Bowl on Saturday afternoon in Boston.
It was a disappointing end to largely-frustrating season for the Tar Heels, but the start of the Bill Belichick era awaits. Belichick, hired to replaced Mack Brown earlier this month, was not with the team through bowl prep as he focuses on building UNC’s roster for 2025.
Regardless of that decision, Carolina was destined to be undermanned in the Fenway Bowl as numerous players have already entered the transfer portal this offseason. That showed up in a big way in this contest as UNC managed just 45 total yards in the first half.
Carolina’s only offensive touchdown of the day came on an 8-play, 96-yard drive in the 4th quarter — long after the outcome of this game had already been decided. UNC averaged just 4.9 yards per play and went 0-for-9 on 3rd down.
Defensively, it wasn’t a bad effort for the Tar Heels. They held UConn to a respectable 5.1 yards per play and kept the Huskies off the scoreboard entirely in the 4th quarter.
With this game now in the rearview mirror, the Belichick era can begin in earnest. North Carolina still needs to finish filling out its coaching staff and roster for the 2025 season. UNC has already earned 10 transfer commits so far this offseason with more potentially on the way in the coming weeks.
