Bill Belichick, UNC’s newest head coach after the firing of Mack Brown, will not be traveling to North Carolina for the Fenway Bowl, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

It has been noted by the same report that Belichick’s move here is not at all out of any lack of support or respect for the team, but rather because he has stated that he does not want to be a “distraction” as the Tar Heels make it through the last stretch of the 2024 campaign. He’s drawn positive comments on a multitude of things, including his attention to the roster.

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham also spoke about how “exciting” it is for Belichick to be taking over the program moving forward.

“I think it’s been really exciting,” Cunningham told ESPN. “People are excited about the future. We’ve talked about how college sports is really changing. The idea of having Bill and someone with his background in professional sports is something that we’re all excited about. This is where we’re headed… it’s good to be an early adopter.”

It will be interesting to see how things play out when the Tar Heels square off against the UConn Huskies at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday in the last go-round before the Belichick era officially dawns at UNC.
