Michael Lombardi has stepped down from his role as North Carolina football general manager.
Lombardi was initially brought to Chapel Hill by Bill Belichick following his hiring at UNC, but he was placed on administrative leave this summer pending an internal investigation.
While the results of that investigation have not yet been publicly announced, Lombardi has now resigned, the school says.

While the Lombardi investigation has no doubt been a distraction for UNC this offseason, the Tar Heels are still off to a great start in 2026. They upset TCU 15-10 in Ireland in Week 0, picking up arguably the biggest win of the Belichick era to date.
UNC held TCU to just 4 yards per play and forced a key fumble in the win.
Carolina will presumably look to replace Lombardi prior to the opening of the transfer portal this coming winter. It’s unclear at this time whether UNC will promote internally or run a full search for its next general manager.
North Carolina will be idle in Week 1 before facing FCS East Tennessee State in Week 2. Carolina’s schedule then ramps up in Week 3 as it hosts Clemson.
