North Carolina’s Board of Trustees will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

The news was shared by WRAL and notes that the board is expected to discuss the contract for UNC’s next head football coach.

Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick has been at the center of North Carolina’s search to replace Mack Brown in recent days. If hired, Belichick would become the oldest active head coach in college football at 72 years old. The board approving his contract would be a necessary and formal step in the hiring process.

On Tuesday, Ollie Connolly reported that Belichick was awaiting an answer from North Carolina administrators after delivering a 400-page “organizational bible” that outlined what the program would look like under his leadership. Connolly’s report said that Belichick was “unwilling to negotiate” the terms he set out, which reportedly would have required “historic levels of investment” from North Carolina.

It’s also been reported that Belichick would require his son, Stephen Belichick, to be named coach-in-waiting. Stephen just wrapped up his first season as a collegiate coach while serving as the defensive coordinator at Washington. The Huskies finished the regular season ranked 32nd in defensive SP+.

If Belichick is not hired by North Carolina, it’s unclear where the search would turn to next. Other reported candidates, such as Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, are no longer believed to be in consideration for the role.
