Oklahoma lured a potential star away from his home state on Friday afternoon, getting a commitment from 4-star phenom Bode Sparrow, whose recruitment designation is as an athlete.

That means that the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder is as versatile as they come. It also means that the product of Kaysville, Utah, really wanted to come to Norman, because he had home state notable programs like BYU and Utah high on his list of choices. Big Ten powerhouse Oregon was also in the mix for Sparrow, so this was a big recruiting get for head coach Brent Venables and the Sooners for the 2027 season.

Sparrow made his intentions known to On3’s Hayes Fawcett on Friday, as he chose Oklahoma and the SEC over offers from a slew of Power 4 programs. After narrowing his finalist list down to Oklahoma, Oregon, BYU and Utah back in May, Sparrow pulled the trigger on his decision in late June.

Oklahoma made a lot of college football fans in the state of Utah unhappy on Friday, because Sparrow was listed as the No. 1 prospect in Utah from the Class of 2027, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Sparrow is also the 7th-ranked athlete in the class and the 76th-ranked player overall in the Class of 2027, according to those 247Sports Composite rankings.

The Sooners now have 26 commits in their 2027 recruiting class, which is now ranked fourth in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. The only programs currently ahead of Oklahoma in those 2027 recruiting rankings are SEC rival Texas A&M, whose 2027 class is ranked first, followed by No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Miami.

Sparrow showed off his 2-way abilities last season, averaging 102 receiving yards per game while piling up 1,218 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He now has 42 receiving touchdowns over the first 3 years of his high school career.

While Sparrow stars at receiver on offense, he also doubles as an elite playmaker in the secondary. Sparrow had 7 interceptions last season, turning 2 of those interceptions into touchdowns. He’ll have another shot this fall to make more plays on offense and defense before he brings that supreme versatility to Norman in 2027.

While Oklahoma continues to build its roster for the 2027 season, there is an SEC title to go after in 2026. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the odds for those elite SEC teams to be the one holding that coveted conference trophy in December:
