Oklahoma makes decision on OC Ben Arbuckle, per report

Oklahoma is expected to fire offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, according to a report.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz was first to report that news on Monday morning. The reported decision comes 2 days after Oklahoma‘s embarrassing home loss to South Carolina in Week 9.

Prior to a 4th-quarter surge, Oklahoma trailed the Gamecocks 35-10 at one point in the game on Saturday. It’s the second time in the last 3 seasons that Oklahoma has been blowout by South Carolina in Norman.

Arbuckle was in the midst of his second season with the Sooners, joining Brent Venables‘ staff ahead of the 2025 season. Arbuckle arrived at Oklahoma via Washington State, where he also worked alongside OU quarterback John Mateer.

The Arbukle-Mateer partnership has not translated to SEC play. Over the past 2 seasons, Oklahoma is averaging just 4.95 yards per play against conference opponents. That ranks 15th out of 16 teams out of that span.

It’s not yet apparent whether Venables will make other staff changes on the offensive side of the ball midseason.

Oklahoma is 4-4 so far this season and may face an uphill battle to get to bowl eligibility. The Sooners are coming off of a College Football Playoff berth in 2025 and gave Venables a 2-year extension prior to the start of the 2026 campaign.

Oklahoma will play at Florida in Week 10.
