The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off another devastating loss to the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats, a game in which the Sooners’ offense again failed to build any positive momentum.

Senior quarterback John Mateer was the driving force behind the Sooners’ offensive struggles, completing just 24 of his 40 pass attempts for 270 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions.

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was asked by reporters on Tuesday afternoon why he continues to stick with Mateer despite his clear struggles this season, to which Arbuckle responded by saying that he believes that Mateer still gives the Sooners the “best chance to win.”

“Throughout everything that he’s done, the player that he is, the preparation that he has, we believe John Mateer gives us the best chance to win,” Arbuckle said. “Like I said multiple times, we have to eliminate back-breaking errors… At the end of the day I have to be better, and I take accountability whenever those back-breaking mistakes happens.”

Arbuckle coming out and publicly backing his quarterback is typically what fans want to see from a coordinator when his quarterback is struggling, but the concerns around Mateer’s play are still very real.

With 3 losses already on their record, the Sooners’ College Football Playoff hopes hang by a thread, and another performance like the one Mateer had against Kentucky could put the nail in the coffin on their season once and for all.
