Oklahoma is reportedly bringing back a former Sooner assistant to work as an analyst on the offensive side of the ball.
According to OU Insider, Brent Venables is bringing former offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson back to Oklahoma to serve as an offensive analyst. Wilson most recently spent time as the head coach at Tulsa following a 6-year stint as the OC at Ohio State under Urban Meyer and then Ryan Day.
Wilson’s brief stint as the head coach at Tulsa did not go well with an overall record of 7-16 across parts of 2 seasons. Combined with his record as the head coach at Indiana, Wilson has a career record of 33-63, but his work as an OC speaks for itself.
Wilson spent 2002-10 on the Oklahoma staff of Bob Stoops, including 2006-10 as the OC and tight ends and full backs coach. While serving as the OC, the Sooners won at least 11 games 4 of 5 seasons, including 4 Big 12 Championships. Sam Bradford captured the Heisman Trophy in Wilson’s offense during the 2008 season as OU advanced to the BCS National Championship Game.
Offense has been an issue for Venables since losing Jeff Lebby to the Mississippi State head coaching job. Ben Arbuckle was brought on to fix the unit following a 2-year stint at Washington State, and former Wazzu QB John Mateer followed Arbuckle to Norman.
Now, Wilson will also reportedly be in the mix in an off-field role to try and rejuvenate the offense.
