Saturday was a historic day for the state of Mississippi as procedural votes in both the state’s house and senate passed House Resolution 79 in favor of suspending legislative deadlines and filing a bill to change the state flag. The use of the Confederate battle flag within the state was preventing the state from holding SEC and NCAA championship events and inspired many athletes, coaches and administrators to publicly call for the change.

After Saturday’s votes, Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter shared a brief statement on Twitter. His tweeting accompanying a graphic with the statement read “Proud of our state today!”

“This is a great day to be a Mississippian. I am proud of all who have had a part in this momentous decision for our state, including the leaders on our own campus that fought hard for what was right. While there is still much work to be done, this day is a big step in achieving the welcoming and inclusive environment that our state needs and every person deserves.”

The Mississippi Legislature is expected to take the next step on changing the flag Sunday now that the procedural resolution votes have taken place.
