Ole Miss athletic director announces timeline for Lane Kiffin decision
Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter met with Lane Kiffin on Friday and said in a statement Friday evening that the school expects a decision on Kiffin’s future following the Rebels’ game against Mississippi State on Nov. 28.
Kiffin is considered to be the primary target for both the LSU and the Florida coaching searches. Kiffin’s family has reportedly visited both Gainesville and Baton Rouge in recent days. His representatives also reportedly met with Florida officials Thursday night.
But Kiffin is not expected to make a decision regarding his future until after the Egg Bowl, according to Carter.
“Coach Kiffin and I have had many pointed and positive conversations regarding his future at Ole Miss, including meeting today with Chancellor (Glenn) Boyce,” Carter said. “While we discuss next steps, we cannot lose sight of what is most important — our sixth-ranked team that is poised to finish the regular season in historic fashion.
“Despite the outside noise, Coach Kiffin is focused on preparing our team for the Egg Bowl, and together, we want to ensure that our players and coaches can concentrate fully on next Friday’s game. This team is on the cusp of an unprecedented season, and it’s imperative they feel the support of the Ole Miss family in the week ahead.
“An announcement on Coach Kiffin’s future is expected the Saturday following the game.”
Earlier this week, it was reported that Ole Miss had given Kiffin a deadline to decide on his future with the school. Kiffin went on The Pat McAfee Show days later to deny that any such ultimatum had been given.
More than anything, it seems as though Ole Miss leadership wants to be able to protect what has been, to this point, a special season.
The Rebels are still in the running to make the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff. They have never won 11 games in a single regular season before. A win in the Egg Bowl would match the 2023 program record for wins in a season.
