Ole Miss runs disastrous trick play on opening drive of Gator Bowl

Ole Miss is taking on Duke in the Gator Bowl on Thursday night. This isn’t the bowl game Ole Miss and coach Lane Kiffin had in mind after posting a 9-3 record in the regular season, but the Rebels (along with Alabama and South Carolina) were on the outside looking in for the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff field.

Still, 10-win seasons are nothing to turn up your nose at, so the Rebels came out looking to make a statement on Thursday night.

After converting a 4th down earlier on the opening drive, the Rebels were in the red zone facing a 4th-and-4 play when, well… you can see for yourself below the disaster that unfolded:

It didn’t end up hurting the Rebels, as the defense got a stop after the interception and then the Ole Miss offense got its act together and scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession.

Juice Wells scored the opening touchdown in the game to give the Rebels a 7-0 lead midway through the 1st quarter. As long as Ole Miss can avoid any additional disasters in the red zone, this could be yet another high-scoring game for Kiffin’s squad, which would help boost the SEC’s bowl-season résumé.
