There will be increased security this weekend in the wake of Lane Kiffin‘s return to Oxford, according to WTVA 9-News.
Kiffin, who joined the LSU Tigers before the Rebels’ College Football Playoff run began, left many in his former fanbase angry and upset. Per WTVA’s Jake Holcomb, Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCuthen expects this weekend’s game to bring one of the largest crowds in Ole Miss history.
“I feel like it will probably be one of the biggest crowds that any of us have ever seen… you take that into consideration [when planning],” McCutchen told Holcomb. “Everything kind of goes off volume. So, you looked at what we did last weekend. You assume that will be twice as many people here… you wanna make sure you have the staff and you have them spread out, and the optics are there to make sure everybody feels safe.”
Holcomb said McCutchen dispelled rumors that the National Guard would be activated for Saturday’s game. However, there are efforts to bring in additional horse-mounted patrols from both Mobile, AL and New Orleans.
The Rebels opened as slight home underdogs to the Tigers on most betting sites. Ole Miss and LSU will kick off at 7:30 p.m. E.T. (ABC) on Saturday night.
