Ole Miss lost for the second time in four games on Saturday. The Rebels’ rally fell short as host Texas defeated them 34-27 to drop to 3-2 in SEC play.

A crucial moment was when Ole Miss elected to kick a 58-yard field goal while trailing 31-24 with 6:21 remaining. Lucas Carneiro’s attempt was blocked. Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding explained the rationale behind the decision.

“We’d already played 74 snaps on defense to that point,” Golding said. “That last drive, missed a couple of tackles, they went down and scored. So I was super concerned about it getting back to two possessions.”

Golding reiterated that the choice was an attempt to be proactive because of what he felt Texas could do. The Longhorns followed up with a converted field goal to go ahead by 10.

“It was nothing about, ‘You’re still four points, one possession,’” Golding said. “That’s nothing to do with that. It’s what they’re going to do with the next drive, which they did. They went down there, kicked the field goal, and now you’re down 10.”

Ole Miss got a field goal to cut the deficit to 7 but Texas sealed the win after Jelani McDonald intercepted Trinidad Chambliss’ pass into the endzone.

Ole Miss will try to regroup when they host Auburn on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12:45 p.m. ET (SEC Network).
