The SEC season began in earnest Saturday, with the vast majority of the league’s teams taking each other on in conference action.

And as a result, analysts and fans have more clarity on where programs stand when it comes to the SEC title and College Football Playoff races.

Following the weekend’s action, ESPN’s Peter Burns released his usual takeaways from the league, and he highlighted 4 key storylines:

1) Keelon Russell developing quicker than Artificial Intelligence

2) Gunner Stockton most under appreciated QB in CFB

3) Will Stein & Kentucky aced their transfer pickups

4) Hell Hath No Fury Like Mizzou Scorned

Burns first emphasized the recent play of Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell, who impressed with over 300 yards of total offense and 4 touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s dominant 56-23 win over Mississippi State. The ESPN analyst emphasized how far Russell has come since arriving in Tuscaloosa as a true freshman in 2025.

In addition, Burns applauded another SEC quarterback, calling veteran Georgia signal-caller Gunner Stockton the “most under-appreciated QB in CFB” after he led his team to yet another victory over Vanderbilt.

Kentucky‘s successful transfer-portal exploits were also a talking point for Burns given the Wildcats’ 35-34 overtime win against South Carolina, and he shouted out Missouri for hearing all of the noise about it still being ranked No. 25 last week and channeling that anger into a dominant win over Florida.
