The first half of the 2026 college football season has featured more intrigue and turmoil than just about any other opening stretch in recent memory, and it has led to what is shaping up to be a very interesting College Football Playoff picture down the stretch.
The SEC, in particular, is looking more and more like a bloodbath by the week, with the top teams in the conference cannibalizing one another and unexpected upsets taking place almost every Saturday.
Longtime ESPN analyst and commentator Rece Davis has had a front-row seat to the action in the SEC so far this season, and he laid out a potential “armageddon scenario” on Wednesday in which only 2 teams from the conference make the CFP.
“Texas beats Ole Miss this week, giving Ole Miss 2 losses,” Davis begins. “South Carolina beats Tennessee in Columbia; Tennessee’s got 2 losses. LSU beats Alabama, that gives Alabama 3 losses. Georgia beats Florida, that gives Florida 3 losses. Ole Miss then turns around later and beats Georgia, that gives Georgia 2 losses. Texas beats Kentucky, gives 2 losses. Missouri is at home against Texas; they give the Longhorns their third loss. A&M is at home against Tennessee, Volunteers fall on the road, they’ve got 3 losses. Then Tennessee comes back home and beats LSU to give them 3 losses, and then Missouri is at home against Kentucky, and they give Kentucky a third loss. Everybody would get 2, some teams would get 3, and in that case you might only end up with 2 in the bracket.”
With how things have already gone in 2026, this doomsday scenario Davis lays out is certainly within the realm of possibility, especially with how deep the SEC has turned out to be this year.
If this armageddon scenario does come to pass and the best conference in football somehow only ends up with 2 squads in the CFP, the folks at the top of the league might start regretting that 9-game conference schedule requirement moving forward.
