Rece Davis says LSU looks like a ‘championship contender’ after Clemson beatdown

ESPN’s Rece Davis is ready to call LSU a national title contender following the events of Week 1.

The Tigers were one of the most dominant teams of the entire weekend, beating Clemson 51-10 in Baton Rouge in front of a primetime audience. LSU’s offense was dominant the entire night and its defense didn’t allow a Clemson touchdown until the outcome had long been decided.

Davis was a guest on Pat McAfee’s show on Monday morning and declared LSU should be considered a national title contender moving forward.

“LSU comes out there and they look like a championship contender from the jump,” Davis said. “The one question I had, as great as Sam Leavitt looked, and he was outstanding running the football … will he be able to do that [all the time] and is that what LSU has to do to be able to run the ball consistently?

“It’s a weapon, I know this. They can extend plays, they can pick up first downs when everything looks broken with him. That, to me, makes them look like a championship contender at the risk overreacting to the first week.”

Davis did leave open the possibility that Clemson isn’t quite the quality opponent that its top-25 ranking suggested it might be.

“Clemson might also just flat stink,” Davis said. “And it certainly looked like that at times.”
