Rece Davis shared his preseason ranking for Alabama on Wednesday.

During a Q&A on Twitter, the College GameDay host revealed he has the Crimson Tide slotted in at No. 5 in the country. His reasoning: Unproven quarterback play.

That’s one spot lower than where Alabama was ranked in the AP Top 25, which was published on Monday. In that poll, Georgia came in at No. 1 and LSU slotted in at No. 5 to give the SEC 3 teams in the top 5.

Alabama is currently going through a quarterback battle during fall camp. The top contenders are returners Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson as well as Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner.

Whoever wins that battle will earn the difficult task of replacing Bryce Young in Tuscaloosa. Young threw for 8,356 yards and 80 touchdowns during his Alabama career, with most of that production coming in 2021 and 2022.

As Davis noted in that Tweet and in a separate interview this week, Georgia is also unproven at the quarterback position. Because of that, Davis said he does not have UGA at No. 1 in his rankings.

Alabama will host Middle Tennessee to open the season on Sept. 2.
