Former Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly may live up to his Mr. Irrelevant status after all — albeit just for the 2017 season.
The ex-Rebel has not been able to throw this offseason as he recovers from both ACL and wrist surgeries, which has certainly hurt his case for making the Denver Broncos’ roster.
According to Andrew Mason, who writes for the Broncos’ official team website, Denver may decide to “redshirt” Kelly — basically have him spend the year on injured reserve and come back as a rookie in 2018:
Think it's a redshirt year for Kelly. PUP or IR. Learn the scheme, get settled in, then see how he does next summer.

Since he hasn’t been able to fully participate in a practice yet this offseason, it is probably in Kelly’s best interest to spend the year on the IR. Otherwise, the Broncos would probably just cut him, as he hasn’t had a chance to prove what he can do.
With a full, healthy offseason to work on his craft, Kelly could come back and make the team as a first-year player in 2018.
