Houston may not have landed the SEC assistant many projected to end up with the Cougars — Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin — but the school still managed to snag one assistant from the conference.

According to SI.com, Mississippi State quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson will serve as new Houston coach Major Applewhite’s offensive coordinator in 2017.

It will be a homecoming for Johnson, who was born and raised in Baytown, Texas, just outside of Houston.

Johnson helped turn Dak Prescott into a star during the 2014 and 2015 NFL seasons and has been an important part of Nick Fitzgerald’s success this season.

Johnson, who played the 2004 season with Dan Mullen as his quarterback coach at Utah, has served on Mullen’s staff since the 2014 season. He was Utah’s offensive coordinator from 2012 to 2013 and the school’s quarterbacks coach in 2010 and 2011.

When Utah upset No. 4 Alabama in the 2008 Sugar Bowl, Johnson was the MVP of the game, guiding the Utes to a 31-17 victory to cap off the team’s 13-0 season.
