Green Bay Packers TE Martellus Bennett didn’t play against the Detroit Lions on Monday night because of a shoulder injury, and now it appears the issue may have been more serious than originally thought.

On Wednesday, the Packers cut Bennett, a former Texas A&M star, with a failure to disclose a medical condition designation.

ESPN reporter Field Yates revealed the news on Wednesday. It remains to be seen if the Packers will be able to recoup any of Bennett’s signing bonus if indeed he was hurt more than he let on when the team signed him:

Considering the Packers lost star QB Aaron Rodgers with a broken collarbone, Bennett wouldn’t have been much of an impact player for the team down the stretch anyway.

However, it’s still an unusual situation in Green Bay, and it’ll be interesting to see how things play out over the next couple of months.

Meanwhile, Bennett will hit waivers, where another team can claim him if it so chooses.
