Ever since the SEC started hosting preseason media days in 1985, the event has never been held outside of the Birmingham area.

In fact, the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, Alabama, has served as the event’s host since 2001, but that could all change in the coming years, according to The Advocate.

Commissioner Greg Sankey was quoted in the article as saying the event could possibly move to cities like Dallas, Nashville and Atlanta in the coming years:

“We’ve got a great tradition here in Hoover. As our footnote has expanded, it’s appropriate to look at options,” he said. “I said back in April that’s on my mind. I don’t have a prediction of when or where, but I think at some point mobility can be a healthy thing for this particular endeavor.”

Sankey made it clear that there was nothing wrong with Hoover, but added that it might make sense for the conference to move the popular event around the southern region a bit more:

“This is a central, easily-accessible location, but I also think there’s opportunities to go to some other locations, just like we’re doing in men’s basketball,” Sankey said.

As with many long-standing traditions, moving the SEC Media Days will likely draw a backlash from some fans and media members, but it sounds as if Hoover will remain in the mix to host the event in the future even if it starts moving around the South.
