Rex Ryan had an outstanding NFL coaching career, taking the New York Jets to consecutive AFC Championship appearances in 2010 and 2011. After his coaching days, he has been a main stay on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown.
However, the former coach is reportedly getting the itch to get back into coaching, as a report came out that the newly open Maryland job has Ryan sending out feelers about the job.
Maryland let go of Mike Locksley on Oct. 21 after the Terrapins lost their 12th consecutive B1G play dating back to last season.
Ryan hasn’t coached since he was the coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2016.
One advantage for Ryan is that he is very familiar with the area, as he was the defensive coordinator for the Ravens for more than a decade.
He had conversations about potentially being the defensive coordinator for the Giants this year, but it didn’t pan out. The last time that Ryan coached at the college level was in 1998, when he was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma.
It hasn’t been reported if Maryland would have any interes in bringing Ryan in to be the coach, but there will be few candidates with the resume that he has.
