Rick Barnes after blowout loss to Alabama: ‘I don’t think I thought we could be that bad’

Going to Tuscaloosa has been difficult for the SEC’s top teams this year.

After Auburn lost to the Crimson Tide earlier in the year, the red-hot Tennessee Volunteers came to town on Saturday night, and their six-game winning streak came to a sudden and unceremonious end.

Alabama controlled the game from the opening tip, cruising to a 78-50 victory. After the game, Tennessee coach Rick Barnes was at a loss for words, simply saying he didn’t think the Vols were capable of such a poor effort (via 247Sports):

โ€œRough night,” he said. “And I think, with this group, I donโ€™t think I thought we could be that bad.โ€

Barnes said the Vols didn’t take advantage of their opportunities in the first half to cut the Tide’s lead, but gave credit to Alabama for playing such a good game:

โ€œWe had some opportunities in the first half to really kind of get back in it,โ€ Barnes said. โ€œWe had it down to two. But we just had guys putting their head down, playing one-on-one. Not what weโ€™ve done all year.

โ€œWeโ€™re not that kind of team; weโ€™re not built like that. Just a rough night. Give them all the credit.โ€

Tennessee fell to 18-6 overall and dropped into a tie for second in the SEC standings with Florida at 8-4. Auburn leads the way at 10-2 in conference play.
