Rick Pitino takes playful shot at John Calipari after being named St. John’s new head coach

Rick Pitino was introduced as St. John’s newest head coach after 4 years at Iona. Pitino, who some consider to be one of the best college basketball coaches of all time, takes over a once great Red Storm program that has not won an NCAA Tournament game since 2000.
But he’s the guy to break that streak. On Tuesday, Pitino joked that he wants to take the Red Storm to another Final Four to get John Calipari off his resume, in reference to potentially becoming the only head coach to take 4 separate schools to a Final Four.
Of course, Pitino has taken Providence, Kentucky and Louisville to the Final Four and is the only person besides Calipari to accomplish the feat. Calipari has done so at Memphis, Kentucky and UMass.
“I’ve had the good fortune to take 3 different schools to the final four, John Calipari has also taken 3 different schools, we’re the only 2 people,” Pitino said. “I want to take St. Johns to another Final Four so I can get rid of Calipari off my resume.”

Pitino should do well at St. Johns, but the iconic New York program is nowhere near the giant it once was. And perhaps his statement Tuesday will fire Calipari up at Kentucky after another slightly disappointing season in Lexington.
