How do you build confidence in football? Sam Pittman says talking about it does no good

Arkansas has been the punching bag of the Southeastern Conference for the last few years and while the Razorbacks are not expected to be a contender immediately under first-year coach Sam Pittman, one of the key goals in Fayetteville is simply bringing confidence back to The Hill.

This is a common theme we’ve heard from Pittman in recent days, as after discussing the need to bring toughness back to the Razorbacks, now the new Arkansas coach is discussing how to instill confidence in his team following back to back winless seasons in the SEC.

“We’re trying to build confidence on seeing something good. We’re not talking about building confidence because it doesn’t work that way,” Pittman said during a recent appearance on SEC Network. “If you can’t just tell a guy how good he is — he has to see on tape that he’s doing things better. And when he’s able to see it along with us, I think that builds confidence.

“So we’ve certainly been trying to do that and we’ve been talking a lot about mental toughness. I think you have to be mentally tough before you can be physically tough and we’re progressing rapidly in that area as well.”

If Pittman finds a way to bring toughness and confidence back to Fayetteville, SEC wins won’t be far behind.
