One-time backup QB Sawyer Smith was thrust into the starting role at Kentucky when Terry Wilson went down with a season-ending injury. That also meant the Smith was a sudden leader on the team.

“Leadership is weird, because there’s so many different ways to do it,” Smith said on the Behind Kentucky Football podcast. “Some guys are the quietest guys on the team and always working after practice. Some guys are vocal, some guys are loud. I kind of like doing a little bit of both, because there’s times when you need to be loud and vocal, and there’s times you need to be doing stuff right. So you never want to be the chirpy, annoying guy. So you’ve got to find who you are, and be just who you are.”

Smith suffered a shoulder injury last week in the loss at Mississippi State, but now goes on the road again to meet South Carolina. He appears ready to go in a critical SEC East teams for a pair of teams facing heavy adversity this season. Smith has said he’s made all the throws in practice this week.

Smith has completed 50 percent of his passes for 575 yards this season, with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium on the SEC Network.
