SEC Network announcer botches field goal call in shocking fashion

SEC Network called the action from Starkville on Saturday, with No. 15 Tennessee trying to steal a victory against a Mississippi State team that had yet to lose in 2025.

The Volunteers were clinging to a 20-17 lead midway through the third quarter when the Bulldogs set up for a potential game-tying field goal. Junior Kyle Ferrie set up for the attempt from 42 yards out, and then things went horribly wrong for Ferrie, or so that’s the way it looked for the plain eye.

But somehow, play-by-play announcer Dave Neal thought a kick that Ferrie yanked horribly was good. The announcers even complimented Ferrie on the strength of his leg before realizing that the kick that was called “good” was very much “not good.”

Instead of it being a 20-20 game with a little over 6 minutes left in the third quarter, Tennessee kept its 20-17 lead, and Ferrie was left frustrated by what was his first miss of the 2025 season.

Here is the presumed successful field goal attempt gone very wrong:

Ferrie is still a very good field goal kicker, which shows with that kick being his first miss of the season in the Bulldogs’ 5th game. And Ferrie did have 2 made field goals on Saturday, from 38 yards out early in the fourth quarter and from 51 yards out midway through the second quarter.

But that third-quarter kick from 42 yards was simply a bad miss, whether the SEC Network announcers noticed it immediately or not.
