SEC Network’s Peter Burns names college football’s ‘most dangerous’ team entering Week 9

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, the SEC has eight teams with a greater than 15% chance of making the College Football Playoff. That figure is three more than the next closest conference (Big 12).

It’s impossible for the SEC to get all eight of those aforementioned squads in the CFP. However, some of its teams certainly have a better chance of winning the CFP than others. In Peter Burns’ opinion, the LSU Tigers — despite having just the fifth-best odds of making the CFP (44.3%) of any SEC school — have the highest upside of the conference’s contending teams.

“When [they] don’t shoot [themselves] in the foot… and [they] don’t make bad decisions… they are the most dangerous team in college football,” Burns said. “I’m not saying they’re the best, but I think that their A-game surpasses anybody else’s A-game in this conference and maybe the sport.”

Fellow analyst Chris Doering agreed, but acknowledged the Tigers’ wide range of play leaves them in a precarious spot compared to other SEC CFP contenders.

“I would agree… that they have the highest ceiling. I think of the teams that are competitors to get in the College Football Playoff, they have the lowest floor,” Doering said. “They do have the tendence to have self-inflicted errors that cost them ball games.”

LSU faces Alabama, Texas and Tennessee down the stretch. The matchups give Lane Kiffin and Co. an opportunity to build an impressive resume, but leave them vulnerable to missing the CFP entirely. The Tigers welcome the Crimson Tide to Baton Rouge on Nov. 7 following their Halloween bye.
