Unfortunately, officiating was a major storyline in Texas’s road win at Mizzou on Saturday. There were numerous controversial calls Saturday in Columbia, but the ruling on the Arch Manning “fumble” that allowed Texas to recover and gain yards may have loomed the largest of all.

After the game, the SEC released a statement clarifying that the ruling on the field was a fumble, and the replay booth did not have clear evidence to overturn the call.

“The ruling on the field was a fumble,” the SEC said, per Eli Hoff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “In replay review it was determined there was not clear and obvious video evidence that he had firm control of the ball when the hand intentionally started forward in order to overturn the call.”

The SEC’s statement may not hold up well with Mizzou fans who feel it should have been an incomplete pass and 4th down for Texas instead of a Longhorn 1st down as result of the fumble recovery.

Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz declined to comment on officiating, congratulating Steve Sarkisian‘s team on the win.
