In this age of college football, it’s hard for freshmen to make an impact, particularly in the SEC. Why risk plugging an unknown, inexperienced player into a void on your team when you can get a proven transfer commodity?
At the end of the day, high school recruiting and development still play a big role in college football. And SEC teams are reaping the benefits of it through five weeks of the 2026 campaign. According to ESPN’s Billy Tucker, the SEC is home to five of the top 11 freshmen in the country, including LSU defensive tackle Deuce Geralds, who’s No. 2 on the list.
“He wasn’t LSU’s highest-rated defensive line recruit… [but] we tabbed [Geralds] as a ready-made Day 1 contributor because of his explosiveness,” Tucker wrote. “He has lived up to expectations… Geralds’ five sacks are tied for eighth nationally, and he even ran for a touchdown in a blowout against McNeese.”
Georgia guard Zykie Helton (No. 3), Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon (No. 8) and Kentucky wide receiver Kenny Darby (No. 9) joined Geralds in the top 10. Vanderbilt passer Jared Curtis landed just outside that group, at No. 11.
South Carolina offensive tackle Darius Gray (No. 15), Alabama running back EJ Crowell (No. 18) also made the rankings. Wide receiver Craig Dandridge (No. 23) made Georgia the only SEC school with multiple players on the list.
