With Virginia Tech moving on from head coach Brent Pry following an abysmal 0-3 start, some people are immediately turning to current South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer as a possible replacement.

CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford states that Beamer could be one of the Hokies’ early targets, which is a move that makes sense connections-wise but may not logistically work at this stage in the young coach’s career.

Of course, the many connections Beamer has to Blacksburg are well-documented. Shane’s father Frank was a legendary coach with Virginia Tech, guiding the program to a 238-121-2 overall record over 29 seasons in charge from 1987-2015. That included 11 double-digit-win campaigns, and Frank is the winningest coach in Hokie history by a sizable margin.

And all while his father was patrolling the sidelines, Shane was right there with him, essentially living in the football facilities and learning the ins and outs of coaching. That upbringing prompted Shane to play for VT as a long snapper and eventually delve into coaching, prompting many to believe that he would eventually return to Blacksburg in hopes of carrying on his father’s legacy.

For now, Virginia Tech fans can only speculate as they watch their 2025 team continue to spiral. An embarrassing 45-26 loss to in-state foes Old Dominion over the weekend was the nail in the coffin for Pry, but while Beamer may be a name that gets the Hokie faithful excited, the Gamecocks’ coach is dealing with his own issues following an almost-as-disappointing 31-7 loss to Vanderbilt.
