Country singer Conner Smith has gotten some notoriety recently for his song “I Hate Alabama,” especially after the Tide’s defeat at Texas A&M last Saturday. Smith, who says he is a Tennessee fan, explained his reasons behind making the song and its meaning.

Smith said this to CBS 42 out of Birmingham about the song:

โ€œThe song is about football and it talks about how Alabama beats you every year, but at the end of the day, the reason you hate Alabama is because thatโ€™s where you lost your girl,โ€ he said. โ€œIt brings back memories. I make the analogy of when you have a favorite song, but itโ€™s tied to your ex, it ruins the whole song. You donโ€™t really hate Alabama, you just hate the memory.โ€

Smith said that most Alabama fans he has had contact with like the song but he definitely took more heat after last Saturday.
