Social media eviscerates Doug Gottlieb for unpopular targeting take
Social media did not agree with a hot take that Doug Gottlieb fired off about the Peach Bowl.
Late in the game, Arizona State was driving and seeking to go ahead of the Texas Longhorns. Faced with a 3rd down, the Sun Devils attempted a pass, but the play was broken up by Texas defensive back Michael Taaffe. The play was immediately reviewed for targeting, but the officials ruled that there was no targeting and no flag was thrown.
In response to that play, Gottlieb – host of the Doug Gottlieb show on Fox Sports Radio – suggested that it WAS targeting, but insisted it should not have been called in that “situation.” Understandably, social media users disagreed with this sentiment and suggested that a penalty is a penalty regardless of the “situation.”
As you can see, many of the comments focused on the idea that “rules are rules,” or implied there was an SEC bias with the officiating crew.
The no-call ended up being huge as the game went into overtime and Texas went on to win 39-31. Still, it was an impressive performance by the Sun Devils who entered the contest as a double-digit underdog. Now, the Longhorns will advance to the Cotton Bowl where they will play the winner of the Ohio State-Oregon Rose Bowl matchup.
Gottlieb is the current men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and is known for The Doug Gottlieb Show on FOX Sports. The analyst previously worked for the Pac-12 Network, CBS Sports, and ESPN before venturing into coaching this season.
