South Carolina was the betting favorite for Saturday’s conference clash against Tennessee. But when the unranked Gamecocks defeated the No. 11 Volunteers 27-24 on a walk-off field goal, South Carolina fans stormed the field at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Fans did not wait long, as the ESPN cameras showed the seats were empty and the celebration was on the field.

Rushing the field will result in a $500,000 fine to be paid by South Carolina. Gamecock fans, though, will probably say the celebration is worth the big expense.
It has been an up-and-down season for Shane Beamer’s team, and Saturday’s clash of former SEC East foes was a 60-minute rollercoaster ride. South Carolina jumped out to a 14-0 lead on its first 2 possessions, only to have Tennessee score 21 points in the 2nd quarter, taking a 21-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the South Carolina offense found its mojo again with a 6-play, 61-yard drive to tie things up with under 2 minutes to go. Tennessee‘s last possession ended with a fumble, setting up South Carolina’s game-winning field goal.
