Steve Belichick resigns as North Carolina DC, per report

The North Carolina Tar Heels have had a dramatic start to their 2026 season. On the field, their impressive international victory over TCU set the tone for their campaign.
Off the field, though, things are a bit of a mess.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned from the Tar Heels. The move comes roughly one month after Belichick, the son of head coach Bill Belichick, was placed on medical leave.
Belichick is the second major staffer inside North Carolina’s football program to resign in the past two weeks. On Sept. 3, general manager Michael Lombardi departed the program following an internal investigation into a human resources complaint. Lombardi was on paid leave for more than a month while the investigation got underway.
Following Lombardi’s resignation, focus of the probe into the Tar Heels shifted to the younger Belichick, per WRAL-TV. Reports revealed lawyers conducting the investigation were questioning if Belichick used drugs on the job and/or supplied drugs to a player. Rumors of a UNC recruiting staffer having a sexual relationship with a player have also been examined.
North Carolina (2-0) takes on the Clemson Tigers (1-1) in its first ACC game this weekend. Kickoff between the Tar Heels and Tigers is set for 12:00 p.m. E.T. on Saturday (ABC).
