Steve Sarkisian comments on Colin Simmons’ penalty: ‘We have to fix it’

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns escaped on Saturday, knocking off Tennessee, 20-17.
A huge reason why was the performance of star defensive end Colin Simmons, who finished with five sacks. However, it wasn’t a perfect performance for Simmons, as he was penalized for a crude gesture during a celebration, which helped extend a Tennessee drive.
After the game, Sarkisian said that the issue with Simmons is something the team has to get fixed.
“We took him out, we addressed it, and put him back in,” Sarkisian said. “At that point, I’m not going to give the guy the death penalty over an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. We have to fix it. That can’t continue as we move forward.”

While the coach was obviously disappointed with his star, there is no denying that he made up for it in a big way later in the game. The five sacks tied a record for the Longhorns and were a part of 10 total sacks on the day.
The Longhorns already have two wins against top 15 teams, and will be off next week. That leaves plenty of time for Sarkisian and his coaching staff to make sure that Simmons doesn’t make a similar type of mistake again. After the bye, the Longhorns will take on Oklahoma in the annual Red River Rivalry.
