Steve Spurrier Jr. is a name Florida fans know very well from his father’s prestigious tenure leading the Gators. Now, the son of one of the all-time greats in Florida coaching history is himself joining the Gators.
According to Zach Abolverdi with On3 Sports, Spurrier is joining the staff of Billy Napier to replace the void left behind by Dan Enos. Enos was a Special Assistant to the Head Coach last year and departed for a job at Wake Forest.
Most recently, Spurrier was at Tulsa on the coaching staff of Kevin Wilson. He held multiple positions, including the role of OC, across 2023 and 2024.
It is an interesting bit of Florida Gators football news. Spurrier Jr. actually began his coaching career in Gainesville, serving as a GA on his father’s staff from 1994-98. Since then, he has had a sustained career as an assistant in college football, including when he rejoined his father at South Carolina from 2005-15. He also served on Steve Spurrier’s (Sr.) NFL staff with the Washington franchise from 2002-03.
Other stops on Steve Spurrier Jr.’s career include stints at Oklahoma from 1999-2001 and again in 2016 and at Mississippi State from 2020-22.
Now, he returns to his father’s old stomping grounds where the elder Spurrier won a Heisman Trophy and SEC Player of the Year honors in the 1960s before returning to coach the program in 1990. Spurrier Sr. is still the program’s all-time leader in wins and winning percentage while guiding the Gators to their first national title and coaching Danny Wuerffel to the 1996 Heisman.
Spurrier Jr. will now get his shot to help revitalize the program and deliver on high expectations heading into a crucial year for Napier.
