SEC legend and former Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is enjoying his retirement from coaching, sitting back and watching college football every Saturday while serving as a consultant for Florida’s athletic department.
Making an appearance on the SEC Network’s “SEC This Morning”, Spurrier shared his thoughts on Alabama’s red-hot 2-0 start to the 2020 season.
“Nick Saban, I think he figured out the team that scores a whole bunch of points regularly is going to win more than anybody else” said Spurrier, per 247Sports. “And they’ve got fast receivers. They’ve had them, gosh, the last 10 or 15 years there, all scattered through the NFL. Certainly that fast player they got, they couldn’t catch him the other day. And they’re throwing it down the field.”
Spurrier is referring to Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who torched Texas A&M for 142 yards and a touchdown on five catches as Alabama routed the Aggies 52-24.
“The more I watch football, I think we all do, the more that you throw it deep, good things happen. Defensive backs, you may get interference or just a great catch. The teams that throw it deep successfully, they’re going to be hard to beat. And their defense is good.”
It’s not a shocker that the man who created the “Fun N’ Gun” offense at Florida believes teams that throw it deep have more success, but he has a point. Alabama looks like it has not skipped a beat at quarterback in the post-Tua Tagovailoa era. Mac Jones has already thrown for 684 yards and six touchdowns with one interception in just two games while completing over 74% of his passes.
