The Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia has officially been postponed, and there’s a new kickoff time for the game.
The game will be played at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday afternoon. It was previously announced as a 24-hour postponement, but Georgia and Notre Dame reportedly lobbied for an earlier kickoff time. The game was initially scheduled to be played at 8:45 p.m. ET on New Year’s Day.
Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley announced a 24-hour postponement during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
“All parties and all agree that it’s in the best in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game for 24 hours,” Hundley said during the press conference.
The game was pushed back exactly 24 hours as New Orleans officials investigate an apparent terrorist attack that took place on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Sunday morning. The latest reports say 15 people were killed in the attack with as many as 25 injured.
The game will still presumably be broadcast on ESPN despite the 24-hour postponement. However, as of publication, ESPN has not yet announced amended broadcast plans.
Notre Dame and Georgia have both announced that all members of their respective traveling parties are safe. Both programs are “sheltering in place” at team hotels until further notice. However, the University of Georgia did announce on Wednesday that 1 student was “critically injured” in the attack.
