Tanner Leggett loves these situations, and instead of bowing to the pressure, he actually prays for them. Leggett delivered in the clutch in a big way on Saturday night with a walk-off single to send Mississippi State to the College World Series finals with a 4-3 victory over Texas.
The Bulldogs will play Vanderbilt starting Monday in a best-of-3 series.
The magical moment also was Leggett’s first hit in more than a month as he is largely viewed as a defensive replacement for State.
“I had a little prayer in the dugout, my teammates were like, ‘You’re going to get a chance to win it,'” he said. “I had a chance a couple nights ago and I grounded out to third with the bases loaded. But it’s part of it. I knew if I got a good pitch to hit, I was going to get a good swing on it. Brayland (Skinner) got the bag stolen, put us in a good place, it was meant to be. Made a great pitch, better swing, though.”
Leggett also mentioned that the Bulldogs offense is fueled in part by the fan base and the ability to be relentless on offense.
About Vanderbilt, Leggett said, “Great matchup, great team, great guys, and we’re good, too, and we’re here for a reason. They’re there for a reason. Can’t wait, it’s going to be a great one.”
