After reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time, Tennessee is expected to once again be a factor in the SEC this season. If the Vols return to the CFP, the ground game could be the catalyst.
Running backs DeSean Bishop and Star Thomas were selected for the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list. Tennessee is 1 of 4 SEC teams with multiple players on the list.
The redshirt sophomore Bishop is a native who walked on and then got a scholarship this spring. Bishop appeared in 9 games last season and rushed for 455 yards along with 3 touchdowns. Bishop ranked third in the SEC in rushing yards per carry (6.15).
The senior Thomas is a grad transfer who most recently played at Duke. Thomas also had stints at New Mexico State and Coffeyville Community College. Thomas has tallied 2,044 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground during his 40 career FBS games. Thomas has also recorded 54 receptions and 6 receiving touchdowns at the FBS level.
Tennessee is ranked No. 18 in the preseason coaches’ poll. The Vols are aiming for the program’s first back-to-back seasons with double-digit victories since 2003-04. Tennessee begins the season with a matchup vs. visiting Syracuse on Aug. 30 (12 p.m. ET/ABC).
