Tennessee may be down to 3 quarterbacks competing for the starting job if an absence at Wednesday’s practice, combined with social media comments, means anything.

Redshirt sophomore Brian Maurer was not present for Tennesseeโ€™s Wednesday morning practice during open portions of the workout seen by reporters, GoVols247 reported.

Maurer’s absence followed an Instagram post, which initially said, “They took my dream after 4 days ..,” Maurer wrote on Instagram on Tuesday night in a post that has since been edited, “that’s okay cause I’m a soldier. #18out”

Maurer was among 4 players competing for the starting job alongside redshirt senior Hendon Hooker, a transfer from Virginia Tech, redshirt junior Joe Milton, a transfer from Michigan, and sophomore Harrison Bailey.

Maurer is in his third year with the program, and has played in 12 career games with 4 starts, all as a true freshman. He’s scored 4 touchdowns, two each rushing and passing. His passing stats are 37-of-81 passes for 550 yards and two touchdowns, and he’s rushed for 97 yards on 28 attempts with two scores.
