Texas defensive end Colin Simmons is set to miss some time in the coming weeks suffering a high ankle sprain last week. Despite the injury, he is putting together an incredible season, and he was recently recognized as the No. 2 ranked player in ESPN‘s newly-released midseason player rankings.

Simmons is the top ranked defensive player on the list, trailing only Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who is the favorite for the Heisman Trophy entering Week 8.

Through six games, Simmons has 25 tackles and 10.5 sacks. He also has 16 TFLs on the year, which leads the country. In a game against Tennessee, he tied a school-record with five sacks.

He entered the season with a ton of hype, and so far, he has delivered. The injury is currently expected to be week-to-week, and the timing couldnโ€™t have come at a worse time.

The Longhorns fell to 4-2 with the loss to Florida last week. Up next for Texas is a home game against an Ole Miss team that has started rolling since losing to the Gators in Week 4.

For the Longhorns to have any chance at making it to the College Football Playoff, they are going to have to play much better than they have. Not having Simmons in the lineup makes that even more challenging.
