Coming off their second loss to an unranked opponent in as many weeks, the No. 19 Texas Longhorns‘ College Football Playoff hopes are currently hanging on by a thread heading into a massive Week 8 showdown against the No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian and star quarterback Arch Manning entered the 2026 campaign looking to finally get over that National Championship hump, but a loss to the Rebels this Saturday would all but eliminate them from contention before they even reach November.
Former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes head man Urban Meyer broke down the pivotal matchup on Tuesday during an episode of The Triple Option podcast, and the 3-time national champion said that this showdown against Ole Miss is the “most important game” of Sarkisian’s career.
“This is the Rubicon,” Meyer said. “If you lose this one, then you’re in trouble… I don’t think it’s his job (on the line), I just think it’s your legacy, though. You’re the guy that couldn’t get it done at Texas.”

With the amount of money Texas spent on their current roster, it was clear from the beginning that the mantra in Austin for 2026 was national championship or bust, and the past 2 weeks have put the Horns on the brink.
As Meyer said, this matchup is the Rubicon for Sarkisian. If he loses this game with all the talent currently on the roster and flushes away Texas’ remaining CFP hopes, the folks at the top of the program will likely start wondering whether he can ever get the job done.
