When redshirt freshman QB Nick Starkel went down with a broken ankle in Week 1 of the 2017 season, the Texas A&M Aggies were forced to turn to true freshman QB Kellen Mond.
Since then, Mond has shown flashes of brilliance, steadily improving and becoming a dual-threat quarterback for the Aggies.
Though star WR Christian Kirk’s numbers haven’t been what they were in the past two years, he’s still Mond’s favorite target, and on Tuesday, he discussed what he’s seen from the talented freshman this year:
“He’s been great when it comes to approaching every week & trying to get better.” – @ChristianDavon2 on @TheKellenMond#12thMan pic.twitter.com/v3hIzk5kiF

“He’s made strides,” Kirk said. “Obviously there have been some rough patches here and there, but that’s to be expected when it comes to a freshman quarterback. Obviously defenses are going to try to do things to confuse him and whatnot, but he’s been able to take it all in stride, not getting too high, not getting too low.
“He’s been great when it comes to approaching every week and just trying to get better. Real proud of him and how he’s been able to play.”
Texas A&M faces another tough test on Saturday afternoon when Auburn comes to College Station.
The Aggies’ Week 10 game kicks off at 11 a.m. Central time and can be seen on ESPN.
