The Kentucky Wildcats advanced to the Sweet 16 once again on Saturday, beating a tough Wofford team 62-56 in Jacksonville.
Making matters tougher was the fact that star F PJ Washington was held out with a foot injury suffered during the SEC Tournament. However, the Wildcats rose to the occasion and moved on to the next weekend of the tourney.
After the game, coach John Calipari didn’t necessarily sugarcoat things, but he was happy with the way the Wildcats battled in order to beat a tough Wofford squad.
Coach Cal was especially happy with the way the defense played. Here’s what he had to say in his postgame press conference:
On being happy with a victory:
John Calipari on Kentuckyโs win over Wofford: "In this profession Iโm in, if winning is a relief, itโs time to retire. I may not be showing it right now, but I danced in that locker room. Iโm ecstatic when my team wins."

On Reid Travis’s double-double:
John Calipari:
โCoaching Reid Travis has been a tremendous pleasure. Everything that kid does is Professional. I have loved every minute of itโ

On using Tyler Herro to defend Wofford sharpshooter Fletcher Magee:
Calipari: I worried about putting Tyler on Magee. I didnโt want to wear him out. It obviously took something away from his offense.

On Kentucky’s post play without PJ Washington:
Calipari: I thought our bigs were unbelievable. They really helped our guards.

On Jemari Baker’s performance off the bench:
Calipari singles out Jemarl Baker for his defense: We coach each player as if they were a starter.

On having a short bench:
Calipari: I told the team, play to their training. Iโm not going to sub you out. WE ONLY HAVE EIGHT GUYS.
